Flowerpot

What are you willing to do?

It was the middle of the day and Lily was making lunch for Harry and herself. When she turned around he was just there in the middle of her home, with a wand pointed at her infant son. She didn’t hear him enter nor feel his magical presence before she turned.

Lily forced herself to remain calm as her mind ran through the situation. “So… Peter betrayed us.”

The man scrutinized her, looking for any hint of fear, before releasing a dark chuckle. “The rat was eager to please. Your wand if you would.” He said as he held out his hand palm up.

The woman begrudgingly handed her wand over, seeing no way to defeat the man before her child was killed. “Why haven’t you killed us?”

“Thank you for not wasting either of one another’s time. I have done, and will do many things to consolidate my power but I found myself thinking what a waste it is to kill a child. One that is clearly magical at that.” He said with a grin as Harry levitated one of the cheerios on his feeding tray into his mouth. “‘The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches’ indeed.“ His grin stretched even wider. Lily’s face twisted into a frown. “What do you want?”

“It’s quite simple. I want to know, what are you willing to do to save the life of your child?”

“As soon as I heard the prophecy, I made a promise I would do anything to keep Harry alive.”

“Really? Even when you could simply make another with your husband?” Lily simply nodded. “A mother’s love. Well then, when your husband returns home from work you will kill him.”

Lily seemed taken aback at this request before affirming her resolve and giving a resolute nod.

“I will be taking the child for now, I’m sure you understand why.” Lily started to object before the dark lord continued, “When your task is complete, summon me.”

“And how am I supposed to do that?” Lily asked, clearly not happy with the situation.

Without a word Riddle stepped forward firmly grasping her left arm before touching his wand to the underside of it and whispering a spell in parseltongue. Lily felt a burn as her eyes were glued to the wand as she saw a tattoo of a black lily with a snake wrapped around it from the point of contact. Alternative: Without a word Riddle stepped forward firmly grasping her right hand before placing a ring with a black rock on it onto her ring finger.

“Simply tap it with your wand and think about getting my attention. Rest assured I will know if you attempt to summon me into a trap.”

In the blink of an eye he was back at Harry’s side. Silent apparition? Lily could only wonder as she finally breathed.

“And with that I shall take my leave. I have high hopes for you and your son. Already you prove more entertaining than young Alice was.” With surprising care and grace the dark lord picked up the small child and seemingly vanished into smoke.
