Flowerpot

A Single Ray of Light

Part 1

Even Hell shuddered at what the world was becoming. Over a century ago, a seemingly endless deluge of demons invaded the world. Harry Potter joined the resistance, trying to stop the spread of the Abyssal Hordes, fighting through the bleak hellscape of the battlefield.

But when the very people you protects can turn on you any moment, and it is difficult to discern the difference between your fellow fighters and the monsters they were fighting, since both sides were now monstrously brutal, the temptation to give up, to join the demons instead, it grows strong.

Surrounded by darkness, soul-numbing violence, and betrayal, Harry teeters on the edge. The people he had rescued from a demonic raid stabbed him in the back, threw him into a pit, and left him to die.

But he survived. Giving up would be the easy thing to do, but he didn’t do easy. Seeing a passage into the underground, Harry goes in. Luck seems to be on his side, even. Although his weapons had been stolen, he finds an old sword under the rocks. Though it had spent decades buried, it is keener than any blade Harry had seen, and he knows it harkens to the now long gone time when Angels stood side by side with mortals to stem the demonic onslaught.

And in the deep darkness, he feels a ray of light. With the blade in his hands, he makes his way out. And every time he falls asleep, he dreams. He follows the blade’s previous bearer, a radiant winged figure, as she descends from the Heavens to fight alongside mortals.

As he observes her, she is his exemplar, a shining beacon, and he strives to follow her example.

Part 2

Fleur Delacour is a warrior of the Celestial Host, her heart full of compassion for the mortals, and outrage at the demons’ atrocities. She comes to support the mortals and help them in their struggle. During her campaign, she feels many eyes on her, including her deity’s, but there is one observer that is different from the others.

She feels the torment of this soul, but also notices that as works, the soul feels uplifted. Many companions come and go during her campaign, but this one observer always comes back.

As the days grow darker and grief weighs heavily on her mind, this observer gives her a sense of certainty. When the people under her protection fall for the seductive lies of demonic cults, the observer’s presence helps her keep a sense of purpose.

But the days grow darker still, and Fleur feels a sense of foreboding from her watcher, when she leads a group of refugees to safety.

During his dreams, Harry recognizes the countryside through which Fleur leads the refugees, and notices the signs that she overlooks. He knows they are heading to the place where he found the sword.

The place where an Angel fell.

Is it possible to defy what looks like cruel fate?
